Beaches deserve our tender loving care every day we visit them. Doing our bit for environmental conservation at these natural areas should not be limited to special beach cleanup events. Whenever Mother Earth grants us the privilege of spending time at a beach, we can give back and lend a helping hand to remove some waste left in the area by others. Whether we are swimming, sunbathing, socializing, walking, doing water sports or otherwise playing at the beach, we may assist momentarily to keep clean the natural area as a token of our appreciation of Mother Earth’s gift and to serve as good example for the beach audience.
Contributing efforts to remove others’ waste on a beach does not need to be burdensome during a leisure day. For instance, those who simply walk on the beach and admire the view may remove trash found on the sand while on their way back. Others who make an outing out of a beach day may, after finishing recreations, search for waste dumped by others on the sand or plants near their spot. Some trash seen in the ocean while swimming may be removed after having enjoyed the swim. For any of these instances, all that is needed is a small garbage bag, gloves, and a bit of time (it may take 15 minutes or less). In addition, Mother Nature’s helpers at the beach may focus on removing easy-to-grab waste such as beverage cans and bottles (glass and plastic), bottle caps (plastic and metal), disposable cups, plates, culinary utensils, straws and food containers (foam and plastic), food wrappers (e.g., candy and snacks), six-pack plastic rings, cigarette stubs, and balloon, clothing and shoe debris.
A beach day can be rewarding for both the visitors and Mother Earth as people may enjoy playtime at the beach and nature is taken care of by guests who may lead the way for others to join environmental conservations efforts. As long as there is a will to help, beaches can be maintained regularly.
